Wireless Printing COMING SOON!!!
We are in the process of building-out a few installers for our on-campus printers that will allow our users to print from the wireless networks.
It's been a long-time coming!
A few restrictions so far:
1) This only works from the Lesley_Secured wireless network... if you are on Lesley Wireless, it is recommended that you search for the lesley_secured WPA key found on the UT website.
2) We have only tested this for OSX Snow Leopard, OSX Lion, and Windows 7... if you have WinXP or anything older than Snow Leopard, we can't guarantee that it works.
3) We do NOT have an uninstaller, so if you no longer want to have those printers installed, all you need to do is DELETE or REMOVE the printer from your printer list.
4) In order to print, you need to have the PCClient application running on your computer. *included in the packages below:
Right now, we are in testing phase and are posting the links to the installers for people to test with us.
The links below contain files necessary to install the network printers and the PCClient that allows you to make print charges.

We are writing up instructions which will be posted SOON.

TEST DRIVE OUR CONFIG!
So, here in the Labs & Classrooms Office, we are diligently toiling away at our new computer lab configurations that are going to be deployed onto the labs & classrooms computers across all of Lesley's campuses..
To TEST these machines, we are placing them in various locations around the campus... at the Library, Science Room(s), Kiosks, etc... and if you see one, please feel free to give it a test drive!
If you notice anything kind of suspicious (e.g. a popup, notification, setting, etc.), OR if you want any additional software, please let us know by posting on our facebook page:
http://facebook.com/lesleylabs
Be on the lookout for these labels:
Also,...
I recently wrote a letter to the faculty....
This is Richard Phung, the Labs & Classrooms Coordinator with UT here at Lesley University.
You are receiving this message because our records indicate that you meet at least one of the following criteria:
- You are a fac/staff who has used- or scheduled- one of our computer-equipped classroom(s) in the past year. --- (e.g. Doble 3rd, 4th, Wolf 2nd, Training/Reading Room)
- You are a fac/staff who has used one of our mobile computing resources for checkout for a class or an event. --- (e.g. Laptop Cart, Classroom in a box, Loaner Laptops)
- You are a fac/staff representing a group that oversees/manages kiosk/public-access computer terminals, special purpose computing workstations and/or related facilities. --- (e.g. Library, Math/Science, Media Center)
- You are a fac/staff representing an academic department or academic support entity (for both faculty and students) who use computer tools for learning or content access. --- (e.g. Instructional Support/eLearning, Academic Achievement, Accessibility, etc)
I am writing to fill you in on some innovations that we have made in the Labs & Classrooms Office and to invite you to join me in a collaborative effort to cater to our community with more efficient and better equipped computer tools.
The first major initiative that I have been working on is a Master Image, a customized computer configuration including the Operating System (MacOSX and/or Windows 7) and desktop applications. This Master Image be applied to all Lab & Classroom computers on the Cambridge campuses, thus ensuring that no matter what location the end-users are sitting-down at, they are greeted with the same User Interface and updated desktop environment.
*The 2nd phase of this initiative will be to custom-cater individual area computing resources to fit the needs of certain areas of academic focus.--- Please contact me directly if this is you.
I invite you and your colleagues to participate in our Master Image TEST DRIVE to get a first-hand look at some of the quality of life improvements and next generation configuration!
For this test-drive, I have installed a Vanilla installation on a handful of Dual-Boot iMacs, Dual-Boot MacBook/Pros, and IBM ThinkPad Laptops.
I will be placing these units in public areas/offices, and they will be available in our office for testing between Nov 10-Dec 1.
It would be helpful to take a minute to do the following:
*IF you are a fac/staff and you have your own computing resources, I would be GLAD to install our latest master image on any of your workstations to test-drive (so long as they meet our system requirements). *Please contact me for details.
- Review your curriculum and course materials on the workstations:
- Test your media on the machine (including classroom documents, video/audio, etc)
- Test your web content: webpages, plugins, myLesley, other content sources
- Note any suspicious behavior: pop-ups, dialogs, prompts, etc.
- Leave feedback
The important dates to note:November 10, 2011 - December 1, 2011 - I will be collecting feedback on these computer configurations.
Software purchases must be completed BEFORE December 1. *normally, this is October 1, but we extended it.
Final Master Image(s) completed by: December 7
Final Area-Specific Image(s) completed by: December 13
Early-bird Image Roll-out: December 14 - December 20
Semester ENDS: December 20, 2011
Image Roll-out: *Varied between December 21, 2011 - January 20, 2012 --- *I will post these date/times on a calendar.

Microsoft 2010 Product Activation
We are still trying to perform activations of the Microsoft Products across the computer labs, but we may not be able to get to them all before xmas.
If you are needing to use Office, you have a few options:
1) Use Office 2011 on Mac
2) Use Office 2007 on Windows (we have 2 versions of office installed on the computers, 2010 is the one that requires activation, 2007 does not)
3) Use Office Online via Outlook.com (log-in with your username@lesley.edu), then click "Documents"
We apologize for the inconveniences this has caused you.. but please understand we are working diligently to fix them for the future.
If you need to talk to someone, please feel free to yell at Richard Phung, the Labs & Classrooms Coordinator at UT by emailing him: rphung@lesley.edu

Labs & Classrooms Updates
Howdy, folks---
Thanks for being such great supporters of Lesley's Labs & Classrooms.
To keep you abreast of some of the developments in our office...
- Equipment Reservations
The last few weeks, I have been working on re-creating the Equipment Reservation process.... Moving from using the form (found here) to using an all-out scheduling software (found here -sorry, on-campus only)... I am continuing to develop the scheduling platform, but so far, i have entered a database of equipment and have enabled login via your @lesley username. So please stay tuned! - New STAFF.
No doubt, you have seen posting for openings in our department.
This year, I have a fresh crop of new student agents who have been helping us keep-up with our ever-changing facilities. So if you've been in a class and a polite student comes-in to greet you or help your teacher set-up their technology, be sure to say "HELLO!"
You know who we are by the nametags---
*I know it's a cruel joke, but if you see any of them, be sure to quiz them on something technology related.
As we are filling-up our work week with student knowledgeable student staff, we are also looking for students who would be interested in organizing events and creating marketing materials. If you are interested in working with us, please visit our job site. - Tech & YOU
So, I, Richard Phung, Labs & Classrooms Coordinator with UT and resident tech person, has been offering Technology information sessions... these info sessions are basically focus groups where students, staff, and faculty can ask questions and show-off their tech skills.
They are completely informal and discuss how technology influences our personal and professional lives. Be sure to check out our schedule here (http://www.lesley.edu/ut/academic/info.html).
So tell your friends!!! grab lunch and come down to meet with us. - Room Checks & Repairs
My new staff has been very diligent about making sure the rooms are in tip-top shape.
4-5 times a day, they roam the halls and classrooms... keeping keen eyes on any equipment that is out of place.
ANY or ALL issues that are considered "known" issues are reported on this document.
AKA Status and Conditions. The status and conditions can be found on our main website:
http://lesley.edu/ut/academic
OR via our blog http://lesleylabs.blogspot.com - Event Support
Lastly, the Labs & Classrooms Division of University Technology will begin the process of working out a policy to support events on campus. This means hiring new students to track/care for equipment, set-up/strike, and to act as the go-between for planning & implementation.
Seeing as how no one else will do it or knows how to do it...
With more than a dozen events under our belt, (2 this year alone), we are well on our way.
This is a LONG and arduous task, but please have patience as we create policies and procedures for offering this service to the campus. - DEMO STATION DEPLOYMENT
We are currently working out a proposed pilot program for installing DEMO computers in the black boxes themselves, thus eliminating the need to tote-in a computer for A/V equipped classrooms. So far, it's pretty hush-hush...
****Please check back again later for notices and updates related to this roll-out****
For any questions, please feel free to contact us directly...

I know, right? 3 days before classes start and we've detected some disturbing news...
We rolled-out a new computer configuration as of June 2011, and only recently discovered that Java WebStart and JRE is NOT installed on the Windows 7 configuration.
The areas that this affects:
So... please please please be patient with our office as we work diligently to fix this.
We are working to update everything in the next couple of weeks, so if you are trying to use Java in the labs, you will have more success if you use MacOSX (java is built-in).
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Reporting Problems... the right way.
If you are reading this, that means that you are using one of the computers in the computer lab.
I want to thank you all for being so patient and diligently reporting issues with the computer labs/classrooms and printing. It is your continued communication that provides very important feedback and allows us to address any technical concerns that may arise.
Unfortunately, as important as it is to report these technical issues, it is by far more important to be aware of HOW and WHAT you report as every single bit of information that can be provided will give us a better idea of how to service those concerns.
HOW---?
You can call: 617.349.8770 and leave a message or talk to a call-center representative.
You can email: ut@lesley.edu (PREFERRED METHOD)
You can chat: visit: http://smartipantz.perceptis.com/lesley and click "Live Chat"
WHAT---?
Regardless of your preferred methods, at the very least, you should be able to provide this information:
1) Where are you located (specifically the building and room#).
2) Your name and username
3) Time/Date of the incident
4) Your operating system (Windows/Mac)
5) The application/software you are using --- e.g. Firefox, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word
6) The website (if applicable) and/or the specific FILE (name, type--- e.g. something.docx)
7) The exact steps you took in as much detail as possible ---- e.g. I downloaded the PDF attachment from my email, clicked "OK" to open, got an error message.
8) If there was an error message, tell us exactly. (and i mean EXACTLY) what the error message said.------
Example-----
A commonly reported problem is that a print was sent, but that it never came out of the printer.
Incorrect report:
"I tried to print to the printer on the 3rd floor, it didn't come out. I waited for 10 minutes, and nothing happened. It took money off of my account, and I want a refund."
Correct report:
"I was in the Computer Lab on the 3rd Floor of Doble Hall, Room # 309 when I tried to send a print from Windows. I downloaded the file from my email using Internet Explorer, and I opened the file using Microsoft Excel. I clicked "File" then "Print" and I "okayed" the Print box and typed my username and password. Then clicked "OKAY" after the price popped-up. A couple of seconds later, a pop-up came up on the bottom right hand side of the screen that said it printed okay, but I waited for 10 minutes and nothing happened. The cost of the print was $0.50 and I would like a refund. My username is "somethingsomething" and the file name was "somethingelse.xlsx." On my print account, it shows that it printed to DOBL-309 at 8:00am on August 2, 2011. Please advise."
"The projector doesn't work. My class starts at 6p in University Hall."
Correct report:
I was getting my materials ready for my class when I tried to connect my laptop to the black box. I turned the box on and the projector came up. I connected the cable from the drawer to the wall plate that was labeled "Laptop 2", then connected the other end of the cable to my Mac Adapter, and plugged my mac Adapter into my laptop. The screen on my laptop changed blue, and then all of a sudden my icons were very large. I pressed "Laptop 2" on the blackbox, and the projector attempted to switch, but I got no image. Only a blue screen. My name is Something S. Something, and I teach Something 0000-00. My class starts at 6p, and we are located in University Hall room 3-086. If possible, please send a technician to assist, or call me back at 000-000-0000.
With the examples above, there is a lot more information.... *we are sorry if it takes you 5 minutes to articulate this.... but this kind of information allows us to 1) Fix your account--- we have an idea for what processes need to be done, or what materials need to be considered; then 2) go back and see if there is anything that we can do to prevent this from happening in the future. Any less information, we will never be able to resolve any issues, and the problems will persist.
Please do your community a service by helping us help you better! Report ALL information that you possibly can when reporting technical issues.

Labs & Classrooms Q2 Update!
Howdy, folks--
Hope you all are doing well.
The semester is coming to an end... Seems to pass by so fast!
We here in the Labs & Classrooms division have been working hard to put things together for the upcoming season change.
A couple of things you might find different for the upcoming weeks:
- WITHIN THE NEXT MONTH
- We are adding a new Color Laser printer in the Doble InfoCommons
Our printing records indicate that the INFO COMMONS received the highest volume of printing in the last year (~90,000 pages/1900 jobs). To help balance the load, we are putting an HP Laserjet cp3525x printer which will allow students to print 300dpi on 8.5x11" color prints
- We have added 4 new boom-microphone stands to the equipment check-out list.
- WITHIN THE NEXT 3 MONTHS
- We are moving one of the HP Laserjet P4015's out of the MollyeLichter 24-hour computer lab and putting it into University Hall Training Room (3rd Floor Lab--- UNIV-3-084)
There are currently two Black and White printers in the 24-hour lab and only one in the training room. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but Statistically speaking---
the Mollye Lichter 24-hour lab's combined printing for the last year is approximately- - 30,000 pages/7000 jobs. The Reading Room (~160,000 pages/31000 jobs) and UHALL Training Room (~120,000 pages/22000 jobs) represent a significantly larger print load which can be divided a little more evenly.
- We are building a new image set for the labs & classrooms computers which will include a Dual-Boot Schematic featuring MacOSX 10.6.x and Windows7 Professional NEW!.
The list of proposed software will include: - MS Office 2007/2008
- MS Office 2010/2011 --NEW!
- ArcGIS 9.3 (windows only)
- Kurzweil 3000 (windows only)
- Inspiration 8; InspireData
- Open Source Graphics Package which includes: GIMP Graphics Editor, InkScape Vector Graphics, Blender 3D, Kompozer NEW!
- Cloud Storage Packages: Dropbox, Flickr Uploader, Picasa NEW!
- Google Packages: Earth 3D, Sketchup
- Multimedia: Real Player, QuickTime, iTunes, VLC Media Player, Audacity, Windows Media Player
- Web Plugins: Flash 10.x, Silverlight
- Internet Apps: Digsby, Pidgin, Skype, FileZilla
- Web Browsers: Firefox 4.0 NEW!, Internet Explorer 9 NEW!, Safari 5
Our goal was to merely.... KEEP IT SIMPLE-- SLIM, SEXY, EFFICIENT.
- We are also updating PaperCut PrintCharging to 11.x soon. This will give us a whole range of new interface tweaks and usage upgrades. Your charge accounts will still exist as they do, but the WebUI will have more features and a fresh look!
- WITHIN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS
- We may be looking to acquire additional components for check-out... including, but not limited to: document cameras, microphones/microphone stands.

Bolting these bad-boys down!
I had to take a little more action in preventing the movement of computer workstations from the front of the classrooms in Doble and Wolfard...
People just kept moving them and disconnecting everything.
Now, maybe they will stay put.

It's been a while since we've posted anything, but I just wanted to let you know about a few things that are going on around our department.
First of all, we recently replaced the Kiosk in the Student Center.
The machine that was there was having some serious problems, so we swapped it out with one of our fresh computer images like those in the labs.
Secondly, we have been working to update the ut website (http://lesley.edu/ut/academic)...
